A vacation should not be a seven-guard days
There are two very different reasons for wanting a boss, and both are equally reasonable. The first is obvious: you do not have a qualification and without it there is no cruise ship possible.
The second is said out loud by fewer people. You have the PER, you even have miles, but you know perfectly well what it is like to run a boat for a week with ten people on board: the departure every morning, the responsibility of anchoring, the port maneuver with the public watching and that feeling of not completely disconnecting at any time. You've gone on vacation and you've come back tired.
And there is a third, specific to here: even if you usually sail in the Mediterranean, The Canary Islands have accelerations between islands and deep anchorages that cannot be learned by looking at a chart the night before.

The boat rental with skipper in Tenerife solves two problems at the same time: that of those who do not have a nautical qualification and that of those who have one but prefer not to debut in an archipelago that they do not know. In both cases the result is the same: you get on board, say where you want to go and someone takes care of the rest.
At ECC Yacht the 14 boats in the fleet —12 sailboats from 38 to 55 feet and two Lagoon catamarans—accept a professional skipper. It is not a last minute extra: it is the modality that we hire the most in the Canary season, especially among groups that come for a week and want to make the most of it instead of dedicating the first day to getting familiar with the boat.
And there is a nuance of the Canary Islands that should be understood. Here the relief rules: Tenerife has 3,700 meters of volcano in the middle that create calm areas in the lee and compress the wind in the channels between the islands. A skipper who navigates these waters knows how to read that in the morning report. It is the difference between a comfortable voyage and a long afternoon.

When is it worth hiring a skipper in the Canary Islands
If you do not have a nautical qualification. It is the direct route: without a skipper there is no cruise ship possible, with a skipper you have access to all 16. We explain it in detail in rental without a license.
If you have the PER but few miles. Very common situation. For bareboat we require a qualification y demonstrable experience; With a skipper you enter the same and leave the week with real miles on top.
If it is your first time in the Canary Islands. Even if you usually sail in the Mediterranean, the accelerations between islands and deep anchoring here have their technique. Many skippers of their own boat hire a skipper the first week.
If you come to unwind, not to work. Running a boat for a week with ten people on board is a continuous responsibility. There are those who come precisely for that, and those who come for the opposite.
If you travel with small children. Having your hands free to keep an eye on them, and a professional looking after the boat, completely changes the week.

How much does it cost to hire a skipper in Tenerife?
€1,500 per week on a sailboat and €1,800 per week on a catamaran, plus meals on board. It is a cost that is added to the price of the boat, it is not included in the weekly rate.
Distributed among the group the figure is quite relative: on an 8-seater sailboat it is about €27 per person per day, and on a 10-seater sailboat it is about €21. That's why most groups find it worthwhile to hire them even if they have qualifications.
Do I need any qualifications if I hire a boss?
None. With a professional skipper on board, you are not required to have a PER, a navigation license or previous experience: he is the legal person responsible for the boat and you and your group are passengers on a private boat.
That gives you access to the 14 boats in the fleet, from a 38-foot Jeanneau to the Oceanis 51.1 or the Lagoon 46.
Does the skipper occupy a seat on the boat?
In Most of our boats do not: they have their own cabin - usually the bow one - or an independent crew berth, so the places for your group are maintained.
There are specific boats where it is advisable to adjust the number of people. Tell us exactly how many there are when you book and we will confirm which units maintain full capacity with a skipper on board.
Who decides the route, the skipper or us?
You, within what is safe that day. The usual thing is that on the first night you talk about what you want - cetaceans, Los Gigantes, crossing to La Gomera, quiet anchorages, restaurants accessible by sea - and the skipper puts together the week's itinerary with that.
Every morning he adjusts with the report. If one day it is not time to cross the channel, he proposes an alternative plan on the south coast. The final word on security is yours, and so it should be.
Can I take the helm?
Yes, under your supervision and when conditions allow. This is normal, and many clients end the week trimming sails and taking courses with ease.
If what you are looking for is to learn in a structured way – maneuvers, navigation, practice for the title – take a look at the sailing courses, which have another format.
Does the skipper cook or take care of the boat?
No. The skipper runs the boat: navigation, maneuvers, anchoring and safety. She does not cook for the group, she does not do the shopping or clean.
If you are looking for that level of service, on the Jeanneau Yacht 54, the Sun Odyssey 490 and the Sun Odyssey 440 there is the option of hostess on board, which does take care of the service and meals. We also coordinate catering and shopping on board. It is hired separately, consult us.
Can you hire a skipper only for some days?
It is a formula that we propose quite frequently and that works very well for those who have a qualification but little experience in the area: skipper for the first two or three days, including the departure and some crossings, and the rest of the week the boat is for you.

What languages do the employers serve?
Spanish and English in all cases. Depending on availability, we can assign skippers with German, which is a very present language among our clients in the Canary season.
If you need a specific language, indicate it when booking: it is easier to guarantee in advance than on the fly.
Is there a skipper option for departures of a day or a few hours?
Yes. The short trips of our fleet always come with a professional skipper included, because they are cruise ships and it would not make sense otherwise.
