The starting point
In Tenerife, "catamaran" almost always means bus with sail
You look for a catamaran on this island and what appears are boats with one hundred and fifty or two hundred seats that leave Puerto Colón and Los Cristianos three times a day: common music, bar on board, public address system, closed hours and a route that repeats identically from March to October.
It works, it's cheap per person and for many people it's fine. But if what you had in mind was something else - a deck where everyone can sit, a bathroom per couple, being able to anchor wherever you want and stay as long as you want - you won't find it there.
And if in the group there are small children, someone older or someone who gets seasick, the problem gets worse: you end up choosing between a crowded boat or a sailboat that is listing. Neither of the two is the right choice. answer.
The proposal
An entire Lagoon for your group, not a place on a full boat
The catamaran rental in Tenerife suddenly solves the three things that usually bother a group not used to sailing: heeling, lack of space and sharing a bathroom. A catamaran sails upright, has the living room and kitchen at the height of the cockpit and distributes four double cabins with their own bathroom in each hull.
At ECC Yacht we have two of our own catamarans: the Lagoon 43 (Ky Dong), a 2025 unit of 13.85 meters and 9 seats, and the Lagoon 46 (Machango), 14 meters and 8 seats. Both with four cabins and four bathrooms, full kitchen and two 57 HP engines.
From November to April they sail in the Canary Islands, based in Marina del Sur (Las Galletas, Arona). For him rental of catamarans in the Canary Islands the winter season is good: the trade winds ease up compared to the summer and a multihull, which is a boat with a lot of surface exposed to the wind, handles much more comfortably.

Sail upright
A catamaran does not list. You can cook, set the table and move around the boat while sailing without holding on. For groups with small children, older children or someone prone to seasickness, it is the difference between enjoying the week and enduring it.

One bathroom per cabin
Four double cabins with four private bathrooms. On a sailboat of equivalent length you would share two or three bathrooms between eight people. When two or three families travel together, this is what is most appreciated.

Less draft
The hulls of a Lagoon draft considerably less than the keel of a sailboat of the same length, so you can anchor closer to the coast and in places where a monohull does not fit. On the south coast of Tenerife that expands the anchorage map.

True outdoor space
Large cockpit at the same height as the living room, diving boards at the bow and flybridge in the Lagoon 46. In a destination where you sail in short beam in January, life happens outside and the exterior surface matters more than the meters of length.

Two 57 HP engines provide maneuverability in port that no monohull equals: it rotates on its own axis playing with the propellers. For those who do not maneuver daily, entering a narrow mooring is no longer a problem.

A catamaran costs more than a sailboat, and the mooring in port too, because you pay per beam. In return, it comfortably sleeps eight or nine people: divided among the group, the difference per person is less than it seems.
The decision
Catamaran or sailboat to sail in the Canary Islands
The honest answer is that it depends on what you are going for. If what you want is to sail —upwind, trim, feel the boat—a sailboat will give you much more for much less money. A 45-foot monohull climbs into the wind in a way that a cruising catamaran is not going to match.
If what you want is live on board for a week with a group and sailing is the means and not the end, the catamaran clearly wins. You anchor, and the boat is a stable house with four bedrooms, four bathrooms and a terrace. That is the real situation of most charters: they sail a few hours a day and spend many more at anchor.
In the Canary Islands there is an additional nuance. The channels between islands are acceleration zones and when crossing with fresh winds, a cruising multihull requires more attention to trim than a sailboat, because it does not warn of heeling. That is why for bareboat catamarans we ask for specific experience in a multihull, and that is why many groups find it worthwhile to hire it with a professional skipper.

How much does it cost to rent a catamaran in Tenerife?
The Canary season rates for Lagoon 43 and Lagoon 46 are provided upon request, because they depend on the specific dates and modality. Write to us with the dates and number of people and we will give you the fixed price without obligation.
What is fixed: the final cleaning of a four-cabin catamaran is €210, the gas bottle is €25 and the professional catamaran skipper is €1,800/week plus meals on board. The deposit ranges from €2,500 to €3,000 and is returned in full at the close of the charter.
How many people can fit on the catamaran?
The Lagoon 43 (Ky Dong) admits 9 people and the Lagoon 46 (Machango) 8, in both cases in 4 double cabins with 4 bathrooms private.
That configuration—one cabin and one bathroom per couple—is the reason why the catamaran works so well when two or three families travel together or a group of friends in pairs. On a sailboat of equivalent length you would share two or three bathrooms between everyone.
Do I need a license to rent a catamaran without a skipper?
Yes, and we also ask for specific multihull experience, not just the title. A cruising catamaran does not warn of heeling when a gust comes in, and in the Canary Islands the channels between islands are known acceleration areas.
If you do not meet that profile, the catamaran is hired with a professional skipper (€1,800/week plus meals) and you do not need a license of any kind. For a first week in a multihull, this is what we recommend.
Is a catamaran or a sailboat better for Tenerife?
If what you want is to sail—upwind, trim, feel the boat—the sailboat will give you more for less money. A monohull climbs against the wind much better than a cruising catamaran.
If what you want is to live on board for a week with a group and sailing is the average, the catamaran wins: it doesn't list, it has four bathrooms, much more exterior surface area and less draft for anchoring near the coast.
Does the catamaran get less seasick?
In general yes, especially when anchoring and sailing with wind load-bearing, because the boat is upright and the movement is flatter and less pendulous than in a heeled monohull.
In cross or beam seas a multihull has a drier and more abrupt movement, which bothers some people. But for the typical use of a charter in the Canary Islands—sailing for a few hours and anchoring—the catamaran is clearly more comfortable.
From which port does the catamaran leave?
From Marina del Sur, in Las Galletas (Arona), our main base on the island, a quarter of an hour from the Tenerife Sur airport. It is the natural exit to the Teno-Rasca cetacean strip, towards Los Gigantes and towards La Gomera.
Depending on availability and planned route, the departure can also be coordinated from Marina Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Ask us about the specific case.
Can you go to La Gomera by catamaran?
Yes. San Sebastián de La Gomera is about 22–25 nautical miles from Las Galletas, half a day's sailing. With a full week, La Palma and El Hierro also fit.
The channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is an acceleration zone, so the crossing is planned with the report and it is advisable to leave early. We will review it with you in the check-in briefing.
What does the price of the catamaran include?
Includes full use of the boat for seven nights, the regulatory safety equipment, tableware and household items, bedding and the technical departure briefing with one of our sailors.
Does not include fuel, moorings in the ports you visit - which on catamarans are more expensive because you pay per beam -, final cleaning or gas bottle. The skipper is optional.
