The point of game
You have seen the photo of the cliff. From the ground it is not that photo
Los Gigantes is the image that Tenerife sells, and almost everyone follows it on the road: you go up to the viewpoint, you see the wall in profile, you understand that it is big and you leave with a correct photo and a slight disappointment. The real scale only appears when you are below, in the water, looking up.
The usual alternative is the excursion boats that leave from the port of Los Gigantes itself: they are full, have closed hours and make the same route several times a day. You see the cliff, yes, but with two hundred people in front of it and with the return time already decided.
And there is a detail that almost no one mentions and that ruins quite a few photos: the wall faces west. At noon it is backlit. If you go on the morning shift, you get the worst light of the day.
The proposal
Get to the cliff by sea, on your time and with good light
The cliffs of Los Gigantes are, without a doubt, the most impressive image of the coast of Tenerife: a wall of volcanic rock that plummets from almost 600 meters directly into the water, at the southwestern end of the island, within the municipality of Santiago del Teide.
From land they are seen from the side, and from the viewpoint they are intuited. From the water they are understood. When you put the boat at the foot of the wall and look up, the scale changes completely: it is the kind of place that justifies renting a boat on this island in itself.
Here we must be clear about one thing: ECC Yacht is not based in the port of Los Gigantes. It is a small port and we moor at Marina del Sur (Las Galletas) and at Marina Santa Cruz. For us, Los Gigantes is a sailing destination, about 25 miles from the southern base: half a day one way, which easily fits into a full day or any charter week.

The crossing along the southwest coast is one of the best in the Canary Islands, and the cliff It's just the end.

The wall of Los Gigantes
Almost 600 meters of vertical basalt above the sea, with very deep water attached to the rock. You navigate along the wall with the boat stationary or at low speed, and the silence down there is part of the experience.

The cetacean strip
The route crosses the Teno-Rasca marine strip, with a resident population of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins all year round. It is one of the most consistent sighting areas in Europe and is literally on the way.

The Masca ravine
Just to the north of the cliff, the Masca ravine flows into a boxed-in beach that can only be reached by sea or by walking along the ravine. Seen from the water, it is one of the least known postcards of the island.

The coast of Adeje and Playa Paraíso
The route runs along the entire southwest coast. Good anchorages, clean water and less traffic than expected. It is the section where you can stop to swim if you have time.

La Gomera in the background
From this area, on a clear day, La Gomera can be seen entirely on the other side of the canal. If you are doing a week, it is the moment when the crossing to San Sebastián stops being an abstract idea.

The afternoon light
The cliff faces west, so the best light is in the afternoon. If the plan is photographic, it is advisable to plan to arrive at the last minute instead of at midday. The skipper will figure it out for you.
How to do it
Formats to navigate to Los Gigantes
In a full day. The most common format. Morning departure from Marina del Sur, crossing the southwest coast with the strip of cetaceans on the way, arrival at the cliff, swimming stop and return. Between six and eight hours. With professional pattern included and without the need for a degree. See one day rental.
Within a week of charter. If you do the weekly charter, Los Gigantes is usually one of the stages: you arrive, spend the night at anchor or in port and the next day you cross to La Gomera, which is right in front.
What we don't do. We don't offer boarding in the port from Los Gigantes or short departures from there. Our base is in the south, and a three-hour trip is not enough to get to the cliff and back. If they promise it to you from Las Galletas at that time, the numbers don't add up.
For those who are only looking to see the cliffs in a short and economical ride, there are operators that leave from the port of Los Gigantes itself with shared boats. It is a different offer from ours and we say it without a problem.

Can you rent a boat in the port of Los Gigantes?
Not with us: ECC Yacht is not based in Los Giants. Our boats moor in Marina del Sur (Las Galletas, Arona) and in Marina Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Los Gigantes is for us a navigation destination, not an embarkation point. It is about 25 nautical miles from the south base, half a day's sailing, and is one of the most requested routes both for day trips and within a week of charter.
How long does it take to get to Los Gigantes from Marina del Sur?
About 25 nautical miles, which on a cruising sailboat is approximately half a day's sailing depending on the wind of the day.
That means that there, time on the cliff, swimming stop and return fit into a full day of six to eight hours. On a trip of three or four hours, no: it's mathematics, not a lack of desire.
Are there whales and dolphins to be seen on the way?
With a high probability. The route crosses the Teno-Rasca marine strip, which is home to a resident population of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins throughout the year and is one of the most recognized sighting areas in Europe.
It is not a guarantee—they are wild animals—but it is one of the most consistent sites that exist. The approach regulations must be respected: minimum distance, reduced speed and never cut off the group's path. The boss takes care of that.
Is it a shared excursion?
No. Our outings are 100% private: the boat belongs to your group and no one gets on board other than the skipper.
Shared excursion boats leave from the port of Los Gigantes, with a fixed schedule and many places, which cost much less per person. It is a different offer and for many people it is enough: if it is what you are looking for, we will tell you frankly.
Can you anchor at the foot of the cliff?
The probe falls very quickly against the wall, so it is not a comfortable anchoring area in general. The usual thing is to sail along the cliff at low speed and anchor in more appropriate areas of the environment.
Where exactly depends on the wind component that day, and that decision is made by the skipper on the fly. It is just the type of criterion that makes it worthwhile to take someone who knows the area.
Do I need a qualification to do this route?
No, if you book the outing with a professional skipper, which is how all our one-day outings go. In that case, no license or experience is required.
If you have PER and demonstrable experience you can do it yourself in bareboat within a week of charter. Keep in mind that the Teno area has accelerations and it is advisable to leave with the part studied.
What is the best time of day to see the cliffs?
The afternoon. The cliff faces west, so at midday it is backlit and in the afternoon it receives the sun in front of it, with the wall illuminated and the reddish tones of the rock exposed.
If the objective is photographic, plan to arrive in the late afternoon. Coordinating it with the return is a matter of leaving the base a little later, and the skipper will adjust it for you.
Can it be combined with the trip to La Gomera?
It is the natural combination and the most requested in a full week. Los Gigantes is right in front of the canal, so the logical stage is: southwest coast → cliff → night at anchor or in port → crossing to San Sebastián de La Gomera the next day.
