All the charter on the island is in the south, and you no
You arrive at the Tenerife North airport, or you are staying in the capital, or your plan involves crossing to Gran Canaria. And you discover that practically all the nautical offer on the island leaves from Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón or Costa Adeje, an hour long drive in the opposite direction.
So you end up choosing between two inconveniences: making a round trip transfer every day, or leaving the south and wasting a whole day of sailing around the island to reach the channel you wanted to cross.
And there is a question that should be resolved before booking anything, because it changes the entire week: what exactly wins and loses who leaves the capital instead of the south? No one usually says it honestly, because the answer does not always favor the person who gives it.
The proposal
Second base in the capital, for those who leave for the east
The boat rental in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a different profile than the south of the island. You don't come here so much for the postcard anchorage as for logistics: the capital is well connected, it has the northern airport a quarter of an hour away and it is the natural starting point to Gran Canaria and the rest of the eastern archipelago.
Our base in the city is Marina Santa Cruz, within the Los Llanos Commercial Dock, a stone's throw from the center. From here we operate part of the fleet during the Canary Islands season, from November to April, with the same modalities as in the south: with or without skipper, by week, for a day or by the hour.
It is worth stating the obvious: for a typical vacation charter—cetaceans, coves, sun—the base we recommend is Marina del Sur, in Las Galletas. Santa Cruz wins when the plan is different: cross channels, travel miles or combine navigation with the city.
The base
Marina Santa Cruz, Los Llanos Dock
Marina Santa Cruz is integrated into the Los Llanos Commercial Dock, right on the waterfront of the capital. It is a large and well-equipped port, and you have everything on foot: the historic center, the Auditorium, the Plaza de España, restaurants and supermarkets.

The decision
When it is best to leave Santa Cruz and when to leave the south
There is no single answer: it depends on where you arrive and what you want to do with the week.

If you arrive through the northern airport
Tenerife North (TFN) is a quarter of an hour away Marina Santa Cruz and much further south of the island. If your flight lands there – which is usual for peninsular and inter-island connections – the logistics are much simpler from the capital.

If you are going to cross to Gran Canaria
Santa Cruz is the shortest point to Las Palmas: about 55 miles of canal. It is a full-day cruise and a classic acceleration zone, so leaving from here saves you miles and hours of daylight.

If you want to combine boat and city
The marina is on the seafront of the capital. You can sleep on board and dine downtown on foot, something that is not exactly the same in Las Galletas. For groups that alternate navigation and urban tourism it works very well.

If the plan is sun and anchoring, the south is better
The east and north coasts are much more exposed to the trade wind, with almost permanent swell and few guaranteed anchorages. For a week of swimming and coves, Marina del Sur is clearly a better starting point.

If you come for the cetaceans, the south is better
The Teno-Rasca strip is on the southwest coast. From Marina del Sur it takes just over an hour; From Santa Cruz you have to surround a good part of the island. It is a difference of a full day.

If you are going to do miles
For those looking for real navigation, long crossings and gaining experience on the canal, the capital is the best route head. It is also the natural base if the plan includes La Palma to the east or the eastern archipelago.

Where exactly is the Santa Cruz base?
In Marina Santa Cruz, within the Los Llanos Commercial Dock, on the seafront of the capital. Address: Dársena Comercial Los Llanos s/n, 38001 Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
It is on foot from the historic center, with restaurants, supermarkets and urban transport next door, and about 15 minutes from the Tenerife North airport (TFN).
Should I leave from Santa Cruz or Tenerife South?
Santa Cross if you arrive through the northern airport, if you are going to cross to Gran Canaria or if you want to combine navigation with the city.
Marina del Sur for practically everything else: cetaceans, anchoring, sun, Los Gigantes and La Gomera. It is where the bulk of the fleet is and where the sea is more manageable.
Can you cross to Gran Canaria from Santa Cruz?
Yes. It is about 55 nautical miles to Las Palmas, a full-day journey. It is the shortest exit point from Tenerife towards the neighboring island.
The channel between the two is a known acceleration zone: you have to cross it with the studied part and leaving early to arrive with light. We will review it with you in the check-in briefing.
Are there good anchorages near Santa Cruz?
Less than in the south, and it must be said clearly. The east and north coast is exposed to the trade wind and has swells quite frequently, which greatly limits usable anchorages.
The area of Las Teresitas and the Anaga massif is spectacular seen from the sea, but it is advisable to look at the report before counting on anchoring there. For a week of swimming and coves, the south is a better option.
How many boats are there at the base of Santa Cruz?
Varies depending on the week. The fleet is divided between Marina Santa Cruz and Marina del Sur based on reservations, planned routes and maintenance needs.
The practical thing is to tell us your dates and the base you prefer, and we will confirm which boats are available there. If the one you are interested in is at the other base, in many cases we can coordinate the change.
Can I leave from one base and return to the other?
It is possible in some cases, but it is not standard and it must be considered when booking, not on the fly: it involves coordinating the transfer of the boat back to its base and that has a cost.
Tell us the plan you have in mind and we will tell you if it is viable that week and what it would entail.
Do I need a qualification?
Only if you want to take the boat yourself. In the bareboat mode we ask for PER or equivalent and demonstrable experience, which in a base from which channels are crossed is especially relevant.
Without a qualification, the boat is hired with a professional skipper and no license is required.
