The starting point
The sunset is the best-selling plan in Tenerife, and the most overcrowded
All the operators on the island have their sunset departure, and almost all of them work the same: large boat, fixed time, fixed route, glass of cava included in the price and one hundred and fifty people looking for a place on the same side to take the photo.
The problem is not that it is poorly set up. The thing is that sunset is, by definition, a quiet moment, and sharing it with two hundred strangers and a public address system announcing the return time makes it something else. If you are also going to celebrate something—an anniversary, a proposal, a birthday—the discomfort is evident.
And there is a technical detail that almost no one takes into account: in the Canary Islands winter the sun sets early. A poorly calculated departure leaves you reaching the good point when it has already fallen.
The proposal
A whole boat, three hours and the calculated departure time
The sunset by boat in Tenerife with us it is a private departure of about three hours from Marina del Sur, in Las Galletas. Your group and the professional skipper are on board, no one else. The time to set sail is calculated backwards from sunset on that particular day, to be sailing along the southwest coast just as the sun begins to go down.
The southwest coast of Tenerife faces the open west, with the profile of La Gomera silhouetted against the horizon when the day is clear. It is the orientation that makes the sunset work so well here: there is no land to cut it off, and the sea to the lee of Teide is usually flat at that time.
If it is windy, you go under sail, which is how it should be done: without engine noise. And if you feel like stopping for a swim before the sun goes down, it stops. There is no next turn waiting on the pontoon.
The departure
What a private sunset on the southwest coast is like

Calculated time, not generic
The departure is set according to the actual sunset of that day. In the middle of winter the sun sets early, so setting sail too late ruins the plan. It is one of the few things in this activity where the exact time really matters.

Sailing if there is wind
The trade wind usually comes in in the afternoon on this coast. Sailing with the engine off and only the sound of the water is exactly what a two-hundred-seat excursion boat cannot give you.

La Gomera in the background
On a clear day, the entire neighboring island is outlined against the sun. It is the postcard that people look for without knowing they are looking for it, and it can only be seen from the water on this strip of coast.

There may be surprises
The Teno-Rasca cetacean strip is to the west. On a three-hour trip you don't go all the way, but it is not unusual to come across dolphins along the route. If the sighting is the priority, better the full day.

Own fleet, not a marketplace. The boat you reserve is maintained, inspected and delivered by us. We do not put you in contact with an unknown shipowner and we move away.
The check-in is done by a navigator. Not an administrator with a signature sheet: someone who knows the island's anchorages, the accelerations of the channels and what time it is best to cross.
Support throughout the charter. Our technical team is reachable during the days of your rental. If something arises on board, we will resolve it without you wasting the week.

How long does the sunset trip last?
About three hours, which is our usual minimum duration. It allows you to leave the port, sail along the southwest coast, stop during the sunset and return without stress.
Below three hours is not worth it: between the departure and the return you would be little more than a return trip to the mouth.
What time does it leave?
It is calculated backwards from the sunset of that specific day, normally about three hours before. In the Canary Islands the sun sets early in the winter months, so the time changes quite a bit between November and April.
When you book we will give you the exact time for your date. We don't use a fixed seasonal schedule precisely because that is what makes the plan go wrong.
Is it shared with more people?
No. The boat is exclusively for your group: only your people and the skipper get on.
Is the difference with the sunset outings that depart from Los Cristianos or Puerto Colón, where a large boat is shared with dozens or hundreds of people and with closed hours.
Can you bring food, drinks or decorations?
Yes, and it is usual. The boats have a refrigerator, kitchen and kitchenware, so you can bring whatever you want: drinks, snacks, a cake, balloons if you are celebrating a birthday.

Is it suitable for a proposal or an anniversary?
It is probably the best short plan on the island for that, and one of the most requested. Three hours, a moment with a marked time and no stranger on board.
If you let us know that there is a surprise involved, the skipper takes it into account to position the boat and the moment. See also romantic boat trips.
Do I need a nautical license?
No. The output carries professional pattern included, who is responsible for the boat. You are passengers on a private boat and you are not required to have a license or experience.
From which port does it depart?
From Marina del Sur, in Las Galletas (Arona), a quarter of an hour from Tenerife Sur airport and a few minutes from Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Costa Adeje.
It is the natural exit towards the southwest coast, which is the one that faces the open west and where the sunset can be seen well. More details in Tenerife South.
What if the day is cloudy or windy?
The skipper decides with the report. If there are conditions for sailing but the sky is covered, the departure is the same: the sunset may not be seen, but sailing in the afternoon along that coast is worth it anyway.
If conditions do not allow departure, it is rescheduled to another available day. We do not take a group out to sea when it is not time.
