Dolphin and whale watching in Mallorca deep water

Four realistic species: bottlenose dolphin (most likely, resident, groups 5-15), common dolphin (seasonal visitor, large groups), pilot whale (deep water, spectacular groups), fin whale (rare but possible, second largest cetacean in the world). Sperm whales, loggerhead sea turtles, and mola mola can be seen exceptionally. The species depends on the date and area.

No, this is nature. No serious operator can guarantee sighting. The chance is reasonable (~70-80% of seeing at least one bottlenose dolphin on a well-executed full-day outing in season), but not guaranteed. Some days you don't see anything — and the boss will tell you honestly at first. What we do guarantee is a well-planned departure and compliance with regulations if they appear.

Full day sailboat (8h) with experienced skipper: from €1,450. Catamaran: from €2,400. For groups of 6-8 people on a sailboat, it costs ~180-240€/p. If you add lunch (~€55/p) the total is around €240-295/p. For a week of sighting with several trips to different waters, closed budget.

06:00-07:00 ideally. Cetaceans are more active at dawn, the sea is usually calmer (making it easier to see ridges and blows), and allows you to sail far away before the midday thermal wind rises. Yes, it's early — but the odds are substantially better than with a 10:00 departure. Return to the port around 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Three zones according to date and weather: (1) south of Cabrera (15 miles, ideal bottlenose dolphin and fin whale), (2) Mallorca-Menorca canal (deep zone, pilot whale and common dolphin), (3) Mallorca-Ibiza canal (the richest area, pilot whale in large groups, occasionally sperm whale). We always leave from La Lonja Marina (Palma), the skipper decides the route according to the latest information on the presence of groups.

Yes. State regulations on cetaceans (RD 1727/2007 and modifications): minimum distance 60 m, engine at reduced speed (no more than 7 knots), never cut them off or chase them, maximum 30 minutes in your proximity, never jump into the water to swim with them. We strictly comply — it's the only way for the activity to be sustainable and for cetaceans to continue approaching boats without stress.

For people with a genuine interest in marine biology, nature photography, or a different experience outside of beach tourism. For families with children 8+ who like nature (very young children find the day long). For groups of curious adults with patience to scan the horizon. It is not for who is looking for guaranteed activity or who is going to get frustrated if they don't see cetaceans — this is nature, we have to accept uncertainty.
