✓ Full day (8h) ✓ Experienced boss ✓ Binoculars on board ✓ Cetacean regulations respected

He Dolphin and whale watching in Mallorca It's a less publicized activity than sunset cruises or snorkeling—but for those interested in marine life, it's one of the archipelago's most memorable experiences. The deep waters off southern Mallorca, the channel to Cabrera (15 miles), and the channel to Ibiza (60 miles) are transit and feeding routes for various cetaceans. With a skipper who knows the areas and the season, the chances of sightings are reasonable—although never guaranteed, This is nature.

The exits are full day (8h) starting at 06:00-07:00 in the morning — Cetaceans are most active at dawn, when the sea is calmer and sightings are easier. We sail towards known areas (south of Cabrera, the Mallorca-Menorca channel, the Mallorca-Ibiza channel) looking for pods. The skipper uses binoculars to scan the horizon; when we locate a pod, we approach with the respect required by regulations (minimum 60 m, engine at reduced speed, no pursuit).

The most likely species: bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus, in groups of 5-15, residents), common dolphin (seasonal visitor), common pilot whale (large groups in the Ibiza channel), and exceptionally fin whale — the second largest cetacean in the world, which passes through the Balearic Islands during its migration. Best season: May to October. We go out in any of the 15 ships in the fleet, with a preference for the larger ones (Le Grand, Tefiti, Joulukka, Lagoon 43) due to their autonomy. To expand to sighting week With several departures, we coordinated it.

Species and season

What cetaceans can be seen in Balearic waters?

Four species are realistic—plus a few exceptional ones. The probability varies with the date, the area, and luck. Here's what we know.

🐬

Bottlenose dolphin

Tursiops truncatus. The most likely species in Balearic sightings. Groups of 5-15 individuals, Residents of the area, sociable behavior (sometimes approaching the bow of the boat). Sightings possible almost year-round, peak activity May-October.

🐟

Common dolphin

Delphinus delphis. A seasonal visitor to Balearic waters. Smaller than the bottlenose dolphin, it usually forms larger groups (20-40 individuals). It is mainly seen between May and September, in deeper waters (Mallorca-Ibiza channel).

🐳

Common Calderón

Globicephala melas. Medium-sized cetacean (4-6 m), glossy black in color. Forms large groups (dozens of individuals) in deep waters — typically in the Mallorca-Ibiza channel. A spectacular sighting when it occurs.

🐋

Fin whale

Balaenoptera physalus. The second largest cetacean in the world (up to 26 m). Passes through Balearic waters during migration. Rare but possible sightings — especially in spring (April-June) and autumn (October-November) in the Ibiza channel.

📅

Best season

May to October In general, calmer seas mean greater cetacean activity due to warmer temperatures and an abundance of prey. Early departures (6:00-7:00 AM) offer the best chance of sightings—at dawn, the animals are active and the sea is calmer.

⚖️

Respect for wildlife

We fulfilled the cetacean regulationsMinimum distance 60 m, engine at reduced speed (4-7 knots), never chase them, never cut them off, maximum 30 minutes in their vicinity. The idea is not to invade their space but to observe them respectfully — it is the only way for the activity to be sustainable.

Preguntas frecuentes

The most frequently asked questions about whale watching

Which cetaceans can you actually see?

Four realistic species: bottlenose dolphin (most likely, resident, groups 5-15), common dolphin (seasonal visitor, large groups), common pilot whale (deep waters, spectacular groups), fin whale (Rare but possible, the second largest cetacean in the world). Sperm whales, loggerhead turtles, and mola mola are exceptionally sighted. The species depends on the time of year and the area.

Is it guaranteed to see dolphins or whales?

No, This is nature. No reputable operator can guarantee a sighting. The probability is reasonable (approximately 70-801 people, 3 people) of seeing at least a bottlenose dolphin on a well-planned, full-day trip during the season, but not guaranteed. Some days you won't see anything—and the skipper will tell you this honestly at the beginning. What we do guarantee is a well-planned trip and adherence to regulations if they do appear.

How much does a birdwatching trip cost?

Full day sailing trip (8h) with experienced skipper: from €1,450. Catamaran: from €2,400. For groups of 6-8 people on a sailboat, it comes to ~€180-240/person. If you add lunch (~€55/person), the total is around €240-295/person. For a week of whale watching with several trips to different waters, a fixed price is available.

What time does it leave?

06:00-07:00 ideally. Whales are most active at dawn, the sea is usually calmer (making it easier to see dorsal fins and blows), and it allows you to sail far out before the midday thermal winds pick up. Yes, it's early—but the odds are substantially better than leaving at 10:00. Return to port around 2:00-3:00 PM.

Where are the departures?

Three zones according to date and weather: (1) south of Cabrera (15 miles, ideal for bottlenose and fin dolphins), (2) Mallorca-Menorca canal (deep zone, pilot whale and common dolphin), (3) Mallorca-Ibiza channel (the richest area, pilot whales in large groups, occasionally sperm whales). We always depart from La Lonja Marina (Palma), the skipper decides the route according to the latest information on the presence of pods.

Are there any regulations that must be respected regarding cetaceans?

Yes. State regulations on cetaceans (RD 1727/2007 and amendments): minimum distance 60 m, engine at reduced speed (no more than 7 knots), never block their path or pursue them, maximum 30 minutes in its vicinity, never jump into the water to swim with them. We comply strictly — it is the only way for the activity to be sustainable and for the cetaceans to continue approaching boats without becoming stressed.

Who is this activity for?

For people with a genuine interest in marine biology, nature photography, or a unique experience away from the typical beach tourism. For families with children 8 and up who enjoy nature (very young children may find the day long). For groups of curious adults with the patience to scan the horizon. It's not for Who is looking for guaranteed activity or who is going to be frustrated if they don't see cetaceans — this is nature, you have to accept uncertainty.
